Beyond the Infinite Two Minutes is a 2020 Japanese Sci-Fi Comedy film. Starring Kazunari Tosa (Drifter, Love Me, Love Me Not), Riko Fujitani (Beautiful Dreamer, Asahinagu), and Yoshifumi Sakai (He Is Good and Bad Is Me, My Tomorrow, Your Yesterday). Directed by Junta Yamaguchi (Talking Nonsense About Love, Let’s Have Dinner Tonight).

Kato owns a small cafe. He lives upstairs from the cafe and leads a relatively ordinary life. He plays guitar in a band and has an upcoming show. One day, while getting ready to practice, Kato discovers he is missing his guitar pick. While searching for the pick in his apartment, he notices himself on his monitor. The monitor self of him starts telling the Past Kato that he is from the future by two minutes.

Disbelief and shock strikes Past Kato. The Future Kato tells Past Kato to go downstairs to his cafe and to see what Future Kato says is true. With his new discovery, Past Kato tells his loyal employee, Aya, about what has just happened to him. She tries it out for herself and quickly calls her friends over to show them their amazing new time machine.

When Kato and Aya’s friends arrive, that when the fun begins. While everyone is trying to figure out what is going on, things start to run amok. Someone in the group starts to ask the important question, how can they make money with their newfound time machine? While the gang tries to figure out the answers to the all important question, Kato realizes that trouble soon starts to follow the two minute discoveries.

Thus begins the journey into the infinite two minutes.

The movie is shot intimately and in a single-take style. Beyond the Infinite Two Minutes is a very creative and a refreshing take on the world of time travel. A bold and unusual sci-fi comedy. The actors in the film are comfortable with each other and the interaction between them is hilarious. I have to be honest, if I knew that my monitor could see into the future by two minutes, I probably would have reacted the same way as Kato.

Beyond the Infinite Two Minutes is a quick watch, with only a seventy-one minute runtime. The movie has a playful energy and is inventive with how complex their journey into the “future” becomes over the course of the film. Like peeling layers from an onion, the group of friends discover something new each time they use the time travelling TV.

If you’re looking for a quick, and original sci-fi film, Beyond the Infinite Two Minutes is the one to watch.
