MOVIE REVIEW: MAN IN LOVE

Man in Love is a 2021 Taiwanese film and remake of the 2014 Korean movie of the same name. Starring real-life married couple Roy Chiu (Dear Ex, Dectective Chinatown), and Tiffany Hsu (The Victim’s Game, Home Sweet Home). Directed by Yin Chen-Hao in his debut feature.

The movie starts with Chang Meng-Cheng as a debt collector. He works for a small time business that collects money from other businesses.

A-Cheng is not really good at collecting money, but in the end he usually gets what is owed. He meets a girl, Wu Hao-Ting. Her dad is sick and in the hospital. Hao-Ting’s father is in debt and unfortunately, the debt falls on her shoulders while he is recovering. A-Cheng meets Hao-Ting at the hospital to inform her of how much her father owes. He falls in love with her immediately, seeing how she unselfishly cares for her father.

After constantly pestering her, A-Cheng makes an agreement with her, go out wth him for an X number of times and her father’s debt will be erased. Hao-Ting continually turns him down, but finally one day agrees to go out with him after she sees how A-Cheng treats her father in the hospital.

While out on her date, Hao-Ting is guarded with A-Cheng. Even though at times, he comes off a little goofy, she still knows what he does for a living. She only agreed to go out with him to erase her father’s debt and just wants to get it over with as soon as possible.

After a few dates, A-Cheng and Hao-Ting soon come to realize they have a lot in common and soon become inseperable. Their relationship blooms and they come to love each other.

A-Cheng struggles on his day to day as he begins to let his feelings come through. He starts to think that is is not in the right line of work, and starts to think of different ways to leave that business. He wants to do better for her but doesn’t know how, and keeps making mistake after mistake. Hao-Ting loves and accepts him, but A-Cheng lets his pride gets in the way of their relationship.

For a time A-Cheng was happy but he didn’t know how to remain that way. He felt like things were going too good and managed to find a way to destroy it.

Man in Love is an emotional movie that tugs at your heartstrings. The growth A-Cheng goes through to try and become a better person for Hao-Ting is touching. He wants to do better for her. Hao-Ting gives all of her love to A-Cheng and opens up her dreams to him. The two learn to lean on each other. The story of the movie follows your typical love storyline. Boy meets girl. Boy falls for girl. The two date and fall in love. But what differs in this movie, is the outside forces in the relationship. Life events happening and how the two deal with the outcome is the real story. One hides and keeps secrets, while the other one continues to try and make their relationship grow.

While some parts of the movie felt rushed near the third act, the movie still manages to make an emotional impact. Hearts will hurt, and tears will fall. Be sure to have a box of tissues nearby.
